Know Jesus Fully: Steps to Live Broadcasting

     So your church is interested in live broadcasting or, possibly, just making your video archive available to web visitors or church members. Well, the good news is that it is not as complicated as one may think.

     Background- When this ministry first started, we hired a company to supply the needed service to us. They supplied the camera, computer, software and remote control to produce the video. We found that the service was a great start, but the quality was rather poor and the pictures were static. After some research and implementation of new equipment, we were able to upgrade the quality to an acceptable level. One of the most important things in any web-based media is to continue to improve on what you have already accomplished. I am sure that you have heard the term "cob-Web" when referencing websites.
     In 2005, our team decided to live broadcast the Revelation Offers Hope series presented by John Bradshaw here in Santa Barbara. We borrowed a second camera, bought a video mixer, and secured a streaming media provider. Troy, of churchquest.com was extremely patient and guided us through the setup procedure. It was a great learning experience and one that taught us the in's and out's of Internet broadcasting. Out of all that, we found it to be a lot cheaper to do than we the $900.00 per month we were paying at that time. We now host our website, stream live and archived video, MP3's, podcasting, and more, at less than $40.00 per month, and the reliability of the servers have been 100%.  (I have provided a glossary link at the bottom of each page.  Use it to understand the terms used.)
     Getting Started- First, spend adequate time in prayer! Next, get the church membership on board. Without the backing of the church body as a whole, failure is a certain possibility. Go through the proper "channels" and get the key people in your church to support this idea. You'll need to for a small group or committee. These should include those that plan to work with you. You will need a budget and a clear list of what's needed. If the Lord's hand is in this, it will succeed!
      Good planning will ensure success and less frustration and discouragement. Ask your group the following questions:
WHO are we trying to reach?
WHAT are we presenting?
WHEN are we implementing the plan? (start date)
WHERE are we producing this from?
WHY are we doing this?
HOW are we going to reach our target audience? (advertising, etc.)
     Answer these clearly and you will have a good foundation to start from. Set goals, measure successes, look for ways to improve. These are important to the success of this ministry.
     Plan your goals for 6 months and 1 year, 2 years. Do up a budget and make it available to your members. If you have a clear, concise, and coherent plan, the support will be there.
     I have attached a startup budget and a
basic list of equipment. If you look at our actual equipment, you can see there is more than the basic, but the results are different. More funding means more and better equipment. Remember, people are generally willing to donate money to evangelistic outreach programs.
