Article below written by Kathy and Shaun Johnson for "Evangelism" magazine.
"On June 24 through July 13, 2008, the Santa Barbara SDA Church dispatched 9 enthusiastic youth and adult volunteers. They became part of a 90-person group, assembled from all over North America, which traveled to the main island of Fiji to refurbish the Lautoka SDA School. This was the largest mission trip spearheaded by Joedy Melashenko and the Quiet Hour. Amongst the 90 were both professionals who provided dental and health care, and lay workers who provided children’s ministries, and evangelistic seminars at 4 locations around the city of Lautoka. These efforts showed that God is at work in Fiji as over 60 persons were baptized at the culmination of these events.
The Santa Barbara group consisted of Chris, Kathy, and Shaun Johnson, Clay Perez, Adam and Anneke Martinez, Tyler Kirk, Jenny Cho, and Anthony Uhl. Both Clay and Shaun were the Tala Talas (preacher/pastor in Fijian) for 2 of the evangelistic campaigns. The Santa Barbara group also had their hand in leading two construction projects. Adam saw to it that the roof was repaired correctly, while Chris supervised the construction of a computer lab. Other members aided in laying more than 4000 sq. ft. of tile, replacing outdated electrical systems, installing much needed ceiling fans, and repainting the school exterior. Several volunteers also helped in an eye clinic allotting 2000+ pair to those in need. In the evenings all who were not preaching spent their time running VBS programs as well as staffing audio, visual, and camera crews.
All who took part in this event shared a blessing. The Fijians are a wonderful people, warm, loving and very giving. The friendships made with these God loving people, will last beyond this lifetime. When asked if they would do it all over again, all responded a resounding, “YES!” "
